Who doesn’t love a good hot (or cold) shower? They wake us up in the morning, help us to relax and of course keep us clean after sweaty workouts or adventures.
Taking a shower may be a quick and simple activity or it may be a spa-like indulgence. Most of us take showering for granted and haven’t put a lot of thought into the subject of showering.
10 Interesting Shower Stats
You may think your showering regime is normal, but have you ever wondered about those people who use their phones in the shower? Or those who spend their entire time in the shower singing? Check out these curious facts about this common daily ritual.
How Long Do You Shower?
The average shower in the US lasts roughly 13 minutes, and as a country we take roughly 6.7 showers per week, with men out-showering women. While thirteen minutes is a fairly long time, it’s safe to say that most people step out of the shower a little sooner than they’d like to. And, it is recommended you lather up at least three times a week to reduce acne flare-ups and bacterial and fungal infections, especially if you work out regularly.
Morning or Night?
Most people shower in the morning, probably because they need to get clean before they head out to work. Current statistics show that 58% of people take their showers in the morning. Lots of people shower later in the day, too, but the bulk of showering happens earlier, rather than later. Showering is a great way to wake up and start the day fresh!
How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?
Showering doesn’t always equal washing one’s hair, but it still happens on average 5.7 times per week. In fact, only three out of ten people shampoo their hair daily.
Stress or De-stress?
Since the shower is such a great place to relax and unwind, it makes sense that a lot of people do their best daydreaming while they are under the gentle spray. In fact, 67% of people use their shower time to reflect, dream and plan.
There is an exception to that statistic, though. Many women wear a lot of hats in life. This means that they nurture others, while also taking care of any array of career and home-related tasks. So while the majority of people use shower time to destress, women are 16% more likely to ruminate over problems and things that they need to do while they get clean.
Sing While You Clean?
If you enjoy singing, there’s a 63% chance that you do some crooning in the shower. Lots of people love to sing songs as they soap up, probably because the shower is a private place and you can go for those hard-to-reach high notes! Singing is also a form of therapy, so never be ashamed of singing in the shower. We do it all the time!
Hot or Cold Water?
Athletes often take ice baths after vigorous training to reduce soreness. You don’t have to take it that far, but you can obtain a similar benefit with a quick cold shower after your training sessions. Maybe walking upstairs won’t be quite so agonizing with a little dose of cold after a hard leg day at the gym.
Air dry or towel dry? In or out of the shower?
While some people may towel off while they’re in the shower, after they’ve turned off the water, most vastly prefer to get dry outside of the shower stall. It’s possible that people want more space while they’re drying off, or simply associate the shower stall area with being wet. Whether your bathroom is tiny or huge, you likely step out and grab a towel, like most other people do. Or, you could go the Jerry Maguire route and just air dry!
Do you use your smartphone in the shower?
According to a recent study, 75% of Americans have taken their Smartphones into the shower room. As a matter of fact, 20% of women and 30% of men don’t even bother going to the shower without them. Some list music as the reason, while others need it for work or can’t step away from social media. Yikes!
Too big, too small, or just right?
In the age of HGTV, we see dream homes on a regular basis and these typically have huge and glamorous shower stalls. In real life, most people don’t have these luxurious and roomy shower spaces…but they wish that they did. Forty-eight percent of people who own their own homes wish that their shower stalls were larger.
Have a drink in the shower?
Believe it or not, shower beers are a growing trend. It’s a great way to unwind at the end of the day. In fact, a whopping 27% of the population has a beer in the shower at least once a week. Suction cupped shower beer holders and beer soaps are only adding to the experience. Have you tried either out yet?
